Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology
Workshops and Convention

PAA conducts regional workshops each year during May in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia as a means to provide "close-to-home" quality continuing education experiences to PAA members. The annual PAA convention is held each year in September to provide members with high quality continuing education experiences from nationally known speakers and fellow PAA members as well as the latest information from hearing aid, instrument, and other exhibitors. Sherman Lord, PAA VP of Education, is in charge of planning and implementing the workshops and convention. If you have any comments or would like to suggest workshop/convention topics or speakers, please contact Sherman via email at SLORD@prodigy.net or by calling (215) 361-7050.

Board Meeting Results Regarding
PAA 2001 Convention Cancellation
Saturday, September 15, 2001

The PAA Board of Directors met on Friday, September 14, 2001 in Mechanicsburg. Of course, several of our many items of business concerned the PAA 2001 Convention and Pre-convention Workshop which were canceled due to Tuesday's events. The following actions were approved:

Cancel or Reschedule?  After a lengthy discussion of many options, the Board has decided not to reschedule the 2001 Pre-convention Workshop and Convention for another date. Our next state-wide convention will be held at the Radisson Greentree in Pittsburgh in September 2002. We will be returning to the Penn State Conference Center in September 2003. Based upon the response to the 2001 Pre-convention workshop, we have decided to again offer a Pre-convention workshop prior to our next annual meeting.

All registration fees and exhibitor fees will be fully refunded for both events.  Susan Parr, the PAA Treasurer will be issuing refund checks as soon as possible.  Please understand that many checks must be written, entered into the financial records, and mailed, so we ask for your patience during this process.  If you have not received your refund by October 1, please contact Susan by email (sparr@penn.com) or by fax (814-641-9552).  She can then respond to you promptly without having a phone call interruption of either your patient flow or hers.

Refund of 2001 Dues Paid with Convention Registration.  Those participants who elected to join the PAA with their convention or pre-convention workshop registration will be receiving a call from Linda Gonya-Hartman, the Vice President of Membership.  Linda will be calling to learn whether you would prefer to have your full registration fee and dues payment refunded, or if you would like the dues amount of $50 applied for 2002 dues.

Annual Business Meeting of the PAA. The By-laws of the PAA require an annual meeting of the membership, which has always occurred at the annual convention.  The Board voted unanimously to recommend suspension of  the business meeting for 2001 in light of Tuesday's disaster, but we now need the consent of the membership.  All PAA Fellows will be sent a pre-addressed postcard ballot asking for approval of the Annual Business Meeting suspension for 2001.  Please return your postcard promptly.

Academy Reports.  The annual reports from the Board of Directors, which you would have heard during the Annual Business Meeting, will be posted on the Members Only section of the PAA website soon.  Remember you will need to know your user name and password to access this and other "Members Only" information.  If you have forgotten the user name and password that was assigned to you in the letter you received from Linda Gonya-Hartman after paying your 2001 dues, please contact Linda by email at lghartman@nbn.net.

The Board of Directors extends its best wishes to each of you and your families during these difficult times.  If you have any questions concerning this information, please contact me and I will assist you as best I can.

PAA 2001 Convention Cancellation Update
Wednesday, September 12, 2001

As you already know, the Board of Directors of the PAA made the difficult decision to cancel the pre-convention workshop featuring Dr. Jack Katz for Thursday, September 13, and the annual convention scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15.  This decision was not made lightly.  Almost immediately after yesterday's tragic events, we began to receive calls from our exhibitors because of the uncertainty of air travel.  Similar concerns regarding travel were also expressed by some attendees and speakers.  Given these concerns and others, the Board
decided to cancel the events with as much notice as possible to our membership and exhibitors.  We have just learned that the Penn State Conference Center is not going to charge us a cancellation fee for guest rooms or meeting space in light of yesterday's events. This is extraordinarily generous.  The Board appreciates the understanding and concern that has been demonstrated by most scheduled attendees and by all of our scheduled speakers and exhibitors.

Hotel reservations:  If you booked a room at the Penn State Conference Center or at the Nittany Lion Inn and at the time of booking identified yourself as a PAA Convention participant, your room has been canceled.  If you booked a room at a different hotel in the State College area, or if you did not identify yourself as a PAA Conference participant when booking your room at the Penn State Conference Center or Nittany Lion Inn, you must call the hotel and cancel your own reservation.

Future conference plans/ refund information:  The Board of Directors of the PAA will be meeting on Friday, September 14 to decide our next action.  I will email everyone again after that meeting with details of refunds and possible conference rescheduling.  As most of you know, the PAA is required by its by-laws to hold an annual business meeting and this is usually accomplished at the annual convention.  I will also be including information about how this requirement will be met after the Board meeting.

We would now appreciate your continued patience as we provide you with information.  Please do not call Susan Parr requesting a refund or other Board members for more information about rescheduling these events.  You will hear from me again over the weekend with more information.  We all appreciate the involvement and concerns of our members and exhibitors and hope that you will continue to support the PAA.
